Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
Dixon Unified has been a regional leader in addressing issues around our students’ mental health, and you will see messages in the Weekly Update throughout the year that share information, increase awareness, and discuss the steps that we are taking in the District to help support our students regarding their mental health.
September is designated as the national Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and is a period of time when we are especially active in discussing mental health challenges, particularly suicide. The first step in promoting awareness, and providing direct support to our students, is to create knowledge and understanding around the size and nature of the problem. Some recent information includes:
- High school students have one of the highest rates of suicidal thoughts of any group for which there is data. 22% report having them over the last year of data.
- Suicide rates for teenagers have been on the increase for more than a decade, and accelerated during the pandemic.
- Suicide is the third leading cause of death for individuals between 15-24, and the second leading cause for those from 10-14.
For those who think that teen suicide is not a problem in Dixon – think again. Our mental health staff regularly works with students having suicidal thoughts, and intervenes with students who are actively planning or preparing for a suicide attempt. We have had students die by suicide in recent years, as traumatic an experience for a family, friends, and our school community as can happen.
We will provide links to a variety of sources regarding suicide next week. Until then, please be aware that you can access the Suicide Crisis Hotline by dialing 988 from any phone.
Quick District Updates
- Our enrollment typically stabilizes after four weeks of school. We can report that as of today, we have 3039 students enrolled in the District. This number is about 20 students more than we had projected, which is a positive development for us.
- As we addressed thoroughly in earlier updates, there is no benefit for a student to be enrolled in school if they do not show up. Please continue to make daily attendance at school a priority in your family.
- Every student in the District can receive both a breakfast and lunch at no cost every day of the school year. We do need to collect their student ID number, also called lunch number by some people, for the purposes of reporting to the state and federal agencies that provide the funding for the free meal program. We encourage all families to take advantage of this meal program if interested.
- There are a lot of opportunities to get out and see DUSD students participating in athletic programs, where training and competition provide alternative forms of learning for the students who participate. John Knight and DHS have their traditional sports, with the new sport of Girls Flag Football at the high school. The elementary Cross Country program will be starting soon – look for information coming directly from each school site on the details. Schedules for games can be found on the middle and high school websites. Please pick a sport or two and go support our student-athletes.
- The Governing Board of the School District meets every first and third Thursday of the month, beginning at 6:00 P.M. in the City Council Chambers at 600 East A Street. Meetings are also streamed through the District website, and can be watched on Channel 20 on Wave cable, if you are a subscriber. The Governing Board is the overall decision-making body for the District, with its largest responsibilities including our budget, the Local Control and Accountability Plan, all of the policies and regulations that the District must adhere to, and many other things. Every Board Meeting is open to the public, and there are opportunities to make public comment on any agenda item, or on any general topic under the jurisdiction of the Board. Our meetings are typically poorly attended, and we would love to see that change. Please join us for a meeting and see how the District is governed, and share your point of view on any of the topics that are important to you.
