Governing Board Election Results

The unofficial results for the voting for three seats on the Dixon Unified Governing Board have been posted by the Registrar of Voters, with one incumbent being reelected and two newcomers also winning seats. The incumbent, Jewel Fink, received the third-highest number of votes and will be starting her second four-year term on the Board. Julian Cuevas won the largest number of votes and will start his first term as a Board Member. John Gabby earned the second-highest number of votes, and is returning to the Board after having served previously. The terms for all three of these newly elected members begin on December 15th, at which time they will be sworn in.

We would like to thank Lloyd McCabe and Ian Arnold for running for the Board, and Lloyd for his service as a Board Member for the last two-and-a-half years.

Grades, Progress Reports, and Conferences

We have just completed the first third of our school year, passing the sixty-day mark on Monday. All students have received a report card or progress report showing their grades, and parent conferences were held at the elementary and middle schools. For many, the information from these sources is looked at in the short-term – how is my child doing now. It is much less common for families and students to put the recent grades and information from conferences into a longer-term, bigger picture. We think that there are specific things that families and students can and should do to keep a consistent focus on how a student is performing at school. Some of them include:

  • Have regular, ongoing conversations about what your students are learning. Note that we said learning – not just doing. A focus on learning, and not just grades, helps to remind everyone that learning is the primary reason that students go to school. When students have to talk about their learning at home, it helps to solidify what they have learned at school. Students benefit when their learning is shown to be important at both home and school.
  • Yes – grades do matter and should also be an important part of your discussions at home. Every family should regularly look at grades with their children. In the elementary setting, this is almost exclusively done through corrected work being sent home. At the middle and high school level, grades should be monitored through a Homelink account, part of our student information system called Aeries. Homelink allows for families to access the grade book for every class for each of its students. Families can also review attendance and other information specific to their children.
  • Ask your children how they are feeling about school. Many students who are struggling with their learning and grades also have negative feelings about themselves as students. Higher achieving students often feel similarly. Especially in these post-Covid days, when many students are still dealing with the challenges that they experienced during school closure and distance learning, students’ feelings are frequently obstacles to their learning and development. Also, please remember that the District offers mental health supports if you feel that your children need additional assistance.
  • Stay in contact with your child’s teachers! This is much easier said than done, as both families and teachers have so much to do and not enough time to do it all. However, if families really want to know how their children are doing, there is no substitute for direct communication between home and school. Our teachers are asked to contact families to ensure good communication, and home has a similar responsibility to reach out to our staff. If you ever are having a difficult time communicating with a teacher, please contact the site administrator to help remedy the situation.

Please remember that we want for all of our students to be successful in their learning, and that there are many different forms that learning comes in. Success comes with efforts made every day by students, families, and staff – so let’s be sure to make those efforts.
