Attendance!
You are going to see a regular series of items regarding attendance in the Update this year. To put it in simple terms – our attendance stunk last year. The very first and most significant impact of poor attendance is on academic achievement and other forms of students’ growth and development. Missed days of school add up very quickly, and as the graphic demonstrates, the impact over time is a huge amount of instructional time. This example is for elementary school, so while the specific hours missed by content area will be different for middle and high school, the number of days missed is the same.
The first place that poor attendance must be addressed is in the home. We can encourage, support, provide information, and even beg for families to ensure that their children are attending school – but it is the responsibility of each family to ensure that their children are at school. If you need help to make this happen, please do what you should always do if you need help for your children; ask for that help.
Most people know that there are negative financial consequences for the District when attendance is poor. We will discuss that in future Updates. Everyone should understand, however, that money does not drive our concerns about poor attendance. Our responsibilities to our students to learn and grow are the most basic and important ones that we have.

Missing a day of school here and there may not seem like much, but absences add up!
When a student misses 2 days
a month…
They will miss
20 DAYS a year.

30 HOURS of math over the school year.

Verá una serie regular de elementos relacionados con la asistencia en la actualización de este año. Para decirlo en términos simples, nuestra asistencia fue mala el año pasado. El primer y más significativo impacto de la mala asistencia es en el rendimiento académico y otras formas de crecimiento y desarrollo de los estudiantes. Los días de escuela perdidos se suman muy rápidamente y, como lo demuestra el gráfico, el impacto a lo largo del tiempo es una gran cantidad de tiempo de instrucción. Este ejemplo es para la escuela primaria, por lo que si bien las horas específicas pérdidas por área de contenido serán diferentes para la escuela intermedia y secundaria, la cantidad de días perdidos es la misma.
