Welcome to the 2022-23 school year! Whether you are returning to Dixon Unified, or one of our many new families, we welcome you to our new year. We have thoroughly planned and prepared for this year and expect many successes, some challenges, and opportunities to engage with us in supporting your students, as well as the school district overall. We will be most effective when we keep you informed and involved, and you do the same for us. Communication between all of us is the key to getting results, so look for and read everything that we send home, follow us on social media if you like using it, and stay in contact with teachers and administrators as you have questions and concerns. We are looking forward to a terrific year — and need your help to make it happen.
Along the lines of the thoughts above, each site will be holding its Back to School Night in the coming days and weeks. Please be sure to look for the specific details for your schools and be sure to attend.
While COVID is still a big presence in our area and outside it, there are limited restrictions in place as we start the year. We are anticipating that the Centers for Disease Control will be issuing new guidance for schools within the next week. While we do not have the specifics yet, big changes are not expected to take place. For now, here’s what to expect in Dixon:
- Masks are not required, but they are highly recommended. They will be available at no cost on campus.
- Students remain encouraged to clean their hands frequently. Sanitizer is available in classrooms.
- Social distancing has been de-emphasized, but encouraged nevertheless.
- Vaccines are highly encouraged for all students, but remain as a family decision.
- All normal student activities are allowed to take place.
- Family members and other outsiders are not allowed full access to campuses yet. There are a few exceptions:
- Dropping off or picking up a student.
- Dropping off an item that a student needs for the school day, such as their computer, books, or other necessary materials.
- Volunteers are allowed in classes one at a time, and must show either proof of vaccination or a negative test taken that day.
The requirement for parents to be vaccinated or provide a negative test is the same one that our staff members are required to meet, so this practice is not limited to parents and outsiders only.
We are starting the year with 3059 students enrolled in the District. This is about 40 fewer students than last year.
We have a number of teaching positions at almost every school that we have not been able to hire people for. Every school district in our area, and the majority across the state, are in the same situation. We are making every effort to find qualified candidates to fill our vacant positions, and are using substitute teachers as needed. We also have a number of classified positions that we are still looking to fill, as well as substitute teachers and classified staff.
