Follow-Up to Racist Social Media Post
We have not forgotten about the racist social media post made by a student in early February and are continuing to take steps to address issues that have arisen from that incident, as well as longer-term. Students and families have both had the opportunity to participate in structured discussions led by staff from the Solano County Office of Education to help reflect on and speak to their experiences with this situation. Participants were able to offer suggestions for steps for the District to take in addressing issues around bullying, harassment, and discriminatory behavior.
We have recognized that training for our staff is another important component in helping to create culture and climate at all of our school sites that is positive, accepting, and supportive of differences that exist between individuals, as well as groups of students and staff. We were very quickly able to identify a training program and have completed the first phase of it with all of our administrative and management staff last week. The first half of the same training was held at John Knight Middle School, and the second half will be completed following Spring Break.
The specific training that we are receiving is called Advancing Racial Equity. The objectives of these training sessions is to gain awareness of the history of race and of implicit and explicit bias and individual, interpersonal, institutional, and structural racism and how it impacts our students and their families. Participants gain skills at identifying and addressing institutional and structural racism; and increase capacity to advance racial equity.
Finally, there have been many questions regarding what kind of consequences the student who made the post has received and what will be happening with them moving forward. We operate under strict policies regarding the confidentiality of student records, including disciplinary proceedings. What we can say at this time is that the District exercised all of its authority in applying the Education Code and District policies in this situation. The student responsible for the post has received all of the disciplinary consequences that will be applied, and will be held responsible to complete all of them.
