Back-to-School Nights and Continuing Communication
All of our schools have now held their Back-To-School Nights, and we would like to thank those families who were able to attend. These evenings are an important part of getting the year started and helping our staff communicate directly about how classes will operate, and all of the expectations that will be in place for the year. These Nights, however, are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to communication between teachers and other staff, and our families. As of today, we have just over 92% of our school year left. If we do not have any more contact with each other during these 167 days, we are certainly missing the opportunity to really support our students by building a home to school connection. So, we expect our teaching staff to provide you with good communication, updating of grades, and especially initiating contact when there is some difficulty going on. For families, we welcome and expect your questions when you need more information, and reaching out to teachers when you are concerned about your students. If you do not know about something, it is very difficult for you to help. Likewise, if we do not know, we are going to have a very challenging time providing additional support to our students.
One note related to communication are the current problems that some families are having in being able to log into the Parent Portal through Aeries. There was an update over the summer that has caused these log in problems, even for those who have tried different ways of accessing the site. Please look for a District-wide communication addressing this problem very soon, and we thank you for your patience in the meantime.
Income Verification Survey
Last Friday, we sent home an electronic survey, the DUSD Alternative Income Survey. The purpose of this survey is to ensure that the District maximizes additional funding from the State that is used to provide support programs for our students and families that are above and beyond our required programs. These include mental health clinicians, intervention teachers, parent liaisons, and many others.
The attached Alternative Income Survey asks you to identify your students, let us know how many people live in your household, and what range your family income falls into. The information is compiled and submitted by the District to the State, with no identifying family information included.
Please take the few minutes it takes to complete the survey and help to ensure the Dixon Unified is able to provide the best support possible to all of the students in the District.

Chromebooks and District Provided Devices
The District has distributed approximately 3700 computers for student use from the start of the pandemic to today. Our enrollment today is just over 3,000. So, there are a lot of devices, costing a lot of money, out there in the hands of students. This is a good thing! Not so good is the significant level of damages, lost machines, and other problems that we are seeing. Overall, we need our students, with the help of families, to do a better job of caring for the Chromebooks. While we know we will need to purchase replacement devices and additional ones from time to time, we are spending way too much on replacing computers and chargers because of carelessness. Please, help your students treat the computers like they are their own property!
A second challenge with regard to students’ computers is that too many of them come to school without their device. The computers are used by all students in the secondary level every day, and almost every day in the elementary schools. Because of the loss of devices, we have very few machines in classrooms to offer as “loaner” computers. This makes it very difficult for students to fully participate in class. Please help to make sure that your students are coming to school with their computer. The number of them who have smartphones who forget them at home on any given day is very small. We should be able to have the same kind of effort with regard to computers.
Meals
We wanted to make sure that everyone is fully aware that every student in the District is entitled to two free metals per day. Students may take a breakfast either before school or during their morning recess or break. They also get a full meal at lunch. All that is required is that the student knows their student identification number (lunch number) and is able to provide it while getting their meal. This is a requirement of the meal program that we are participating in, and is used to be able to track the exact numbers that we are serving. We encourage all of our students to take advantage of this program while it is in place.
Noches de Regreso a la Escuela y Comunicación Continua
Todas nuestras escuelas han realizado sus Noches de Regreso a la Escuela y nos gustaría agradecer a las familias que pudieron asistir. Estas noches son una parte importante para comenzar el año y ayudar a nuestro personal a comunicarse directamente sobre cómo funcionarán las clases y todas las expectativas que habrá para el año. Sin embargo, estas Noches son solo el comienzo en lo que respecta a la comunicación entre los maestros y el resto del personal, y nuestras familias. A partir de hoy, nos queda poco más del 92% de nuestro año escolar. Si no tenemos más contacto entre nosotros durante estos 167 días, ciertamente estamos perdiendo la oportunidad de apoyar realmente a nuestros estudiantes al construir una conexión entre el hogar y la escuela. Por lo tanto, esperamos que nuestro personal docente le brinde una buena comunicación, actualización de calificaciones y, especialmente, iniciar contacto cuando haya alguna dificultad. Para las familias, agradecemos y esperamos sus preguntas cuando necesiten más información, y nos comunicaremos con los maestros cuando estén preocupados por sus estudiantes. Una nota relacionada con la comunicación son los problemas actuales que algunas familias están teniendo para poder iniciar sesión en el Portal de Padres a través de Aeries. Hubo una actualización durante el verano que ha causado estos problemas de inicio de sesión, incluso para aquellos que han probado diferentes formas de acceder al sitio. Por favor esté atento de una comunicación del Distrito que aborde este problema muy pronto y, mientras tanto, le agradecemos su paciencia.
Encuesta de Verificación de Ingresos
El viernes pasado, enviamos a casa una encuesta electrónica, la Encuesta de Ingreso Alternativo del DUSD. El propósito de esta encuesta es asegurar que el Distrito maximice los fondos adicionales del Estado que se utilizan para proporcionar programas de apoyo para nuestros estudiantes y familias que están por encima y más allá de nuestros programas requeridos. Estos incluyen médicos de salud mental, maestros de intervención, enlaces de padres y muchos otros.
La Encuesta de ingresos alternativos adjunta le pide que identifique a sus estudiantes, háganos saber cuántas personas viven en su hogar y en qué rango se encuentran los ingresos de su familia. La información es recopilada y enviada por el Distrito al Estado, sin incluir información de identificación de la familia.

Un segundo desafío con respecto a las computadoras de los estudiantes es que muchos de ellos vienen a la escuela sin su computadora. Las computadoras son utilizadas por todos los estudiantes en el nivel secundario todos los días, y casi todos los días en las escuelas primarias. Debido a la pérdida de dispositivos, tenemos muy pocas máquinas en las aulas para ofrecer como computadoras de “préstamo”. Esto hace que sea muy difícil para los estudiantes participar plenamente en clase. Ayude a asegurarse de que sus estudiantes vengan a la escuela con su computadora. El número de ellos que tienen teléfonos inteligentes que los olvidan en casa en un día determinado es muy pequeño. Deberíamos poder tener el mismo tipo de esfuerzo con respecto a las computadoras.
Comidas
Queríamos asegurarnos de que todos estén plenamente conscientes de que cada estudiante en el Distrito tiene derecho a dos comidas gratis por día. Los estudiantes pueden tomar un desayuno ya sea antes de la escuela o durante su recreo o descanso matutino. También reciben una comida completa en el almuerzo. Todo lo que se requiere es que el estudiante conozca su número de identificación de estudiante (número de almuerzo) y pueda proporcionarlo mientras obtiene su comida. Este es un requisito del programa de comidas en el que estamos participando y se usa para poder rastrear los números exactos que estamos sirviendo. Alentamos a todos nuestros estudiantes a aprovechar este programa mientras esté en funcionamiento.
