WEEKLY UPDATE/ACTUALIZACIÓN SEMANAL – February 22, 2023

Culture and Climate

The racist social media post that created such a strong reaction within the school community and well beyond it occurred three weeks ago today. People are appropriately wanting to know what the District has been doing in response to the post and the input and questions that we received following the incident. Steps taken and being planned include:

  • A review by all of the administrative staff of all of the applicable sections of the Education Code and District policies regarding harassment, hate speech, and bullying.
  • Meetings with affected students and families and administrative staff from JKMS and the District Office.
  • Discussion between Principal O’Connor and all of the students who were included in the post.
  • Restorative Healing Circles. These are a highly structured process in which students discuss the incident and have the opportunity to receive support in managing their feelings. The focus will be on the victims of the post and other students who have experienced difficulties in response to it.
  • The same Restorative Healing Circle process will be offered to the families directly affected on the evening of February 28th. The school site will be contacting those families directly to invite them.
  • In March/April, all of our administrative staff and some of our teacher-leaders will participate in Advance Equity Training.(ARE). This professional development is intended to provide staff with basic understanding of equity issues, and plan specific steps that can be taken to address the issues with all stakeholders across the District.
  • In March/April, all of the staff at John Knight Middle School will receive the ARE training.
  • We are currently exploring how we can ensure that all of our staff undergo the ARE training prior to the start of next school year.
  • We are also working to organize and provide training for all sites in Restorative Practices. These practices focus on identifying and addressing behavior that harms others, and using strategies that create accountability and understanding for students and staff as a form of intervention that may be in addition or replace traditional discipline practices (dependent on the nature of the inappropriate behavior)
  • The Governing Board received an update on these steps at its meeting on February 16th, and will be requiring additional reports from the administration in future meetings.

We will continue to provide information on the plans and actions we are conducting, as well as report on some of the outcomes of the different activities and trainings.

Other District News

  • Maine Prairie High School has moved! As of Tuesday, February 21st, Maine Prairie relocated from its inadequate facility on C Street to the empty C.A. Jacobs campus on North Lincoln Street. Students and staff are enjoying the larger and better equipped campus that provides them with a learning environment comparable to those of all of the other students n the District, and allows for a greater range of teaching and learning activities. An opening ceremony will be held on March 22nd. Look for more details coming soon.
  • The Dixon Teen Center is happy to invite everyone to a Meet and Greet event at Gretchen Higgins Elementary School on Friday, February 24th, beginning at 6:00 in the evening. The Teen Center staff and volunteers have been partnering with the District for many years, with the pandemic limiting or eliminating activities. We are all eager to see programs for our teens return. Please stop by the event to learn more and see how you can help.
  • Transitional and Traditional Kindergarten registration is still underway. If you have a child who falls in the age range for either program, please stop by your school and get a registration packet. If you are unsure if your child qualifies because of their age, please contact your school and they will help you with the necessary information.

Cultura y Clima

  • A review by all of the administrative staff of all of the applicable sections of the Education Code and District policies regarding harassment, hate speech, and bullying.
