Our teachers are REALLY good at this!\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students are supported by participating in engaging learning experiences but we also need our students to do their part to engage.\u00a0 Here are some things your student is expected to do in every class, every day:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be in the door, when the bell rings.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Record the TOPIC and TASK in their planner.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use their binder.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Engage fully in instructions and stay on task.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Phones and earbuds interfere with engagement.\u00a0 Here is our policy:\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/115B2MHc6Jm3B8obKKJl0FIx8Eeifrtr8\/view?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\" data-rich-links=\"{&quot;fple-t&quot;:&quot;DHS Phone and Ear Bud Policy - Student Version.pdf&quot;,&quot;fple-u&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/115B2MHc6Jm3B8obKKJl0FIx8Eeifrtr8\/view?usp=sharing&quot;,&quot;fple-mt&quot;:&quot;application\/pdf&quot;,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;first-party-link&quot;}\">DHS Phone and Ear Bud Policy &#8211; Student Version.pdf<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Students Need to Be at School to Engage in Learning<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Attendance in high school is critical to student success.\u00a0 When students miss class, it not only affects their academic progress but it also affects students\u2019 socio-emotional and mental health.\u00a0 High school moves fast and it is really hard for students when they miss class.\u00a0 Please make sure your student attends every class, every day, on time and when your student has to miss class, please communicate with our Attendance Office.\u00a0 Please remember that you have 3 days to clear an absence before that absence becomes a truancy.\u00a0 Jennifer Parks is our Attendance Secretary and she welcomes emails or phone calls at <\/span><a href=\"mailto:jennifer.parks@dixonusd.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">jennifer.parks@dixonusd.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or 707-693-6330, ext 7102.<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Engagement Support for Students is Available<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If your students need additional support or a safe, friendly place to do their homework, please encourage them to visit our Learning Center in the DHS Library.\u00a0 We have the nicest staff there and will soon have paid tutors.\u00a0 The Learning Center is open every day from 7:30-8:30 in the morning and 2:00-4:00 after school (1:00-3:00 on Wednesdays).<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Student Clubs and Other Opportunities for Students to Engage<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the things that we lost over the past few years was student interest in clubs on campus.\u00a0 You can only imagine how nice it feels to have renewed interest from our students this year! \u00a0 We have many clubs &#8211; from Chess Club to Barnyard to KPop Club &#8211; and our Leadership Class will be sending out more information, along with a Club Fair, very soon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Athletics are a great opportunity for engagement!\u00a0 If your student is interested in playing a sport, we have both tryout sports and also many sports that welcome all students.\u00a0 Please encourage your student to reach out to our Athletic Director, Brett Peterson at <\/span><a href=\"mailto:brett.peterson@dixonusd.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brett.peterson@dixonusd.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> if they have any questions or just want to chat about opportunities.<\/span><br \/>\n<b>Other Opportunities for Engagement &#8211; Announcements\u00a0<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Every day, during 4th period, we have student announcements with opportunities for students.\u00a0 Here are some things coming up:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Academic Decathlo<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">n, a team academic competition, sign ups are coming up.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If your student is interested in <\/span><b>Environmental Science<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, we have a fantastic opportunity that I will be sharing with students soon.\u00a0 Students will engage in an internship program, Wednesday afternoons, with UC Davis\u2019 Urban Forestry Program.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/11Bgksm-9uZ_u7gdq4QwA5qFMVtZT2S6g\/view?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Urban Forestry Internship Program<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DHS students are also invited to learn more about <\/span><b>public service and civics directly from the elected leaders and civil servants of Solano County<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0 \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Congressman <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mikethompson.house.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mike Thompson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and California Assembly Speaker pro Tempore <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/a04.asmdc.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cecilia Aguiar-Curry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> invite high school students to join their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mikethompson.house.gov\/services\/congressional-student-leadership-council\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Student Leadership Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The Student Leadership Council is an exciting program that allows local high school students to work directly with their elected officials and staff to develop leadership skills, learn how government works, and engage with our community. The Council is open to all high school students who live in California&#8217;s Fourth Congressional District or California&#8217;s Fourth Assembly District.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can verify your Congressional District at: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/members\/find-your-member\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/members\/find-your-member<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> You can verify your State Assembly District at: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov\/<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Applicants should be passionate about helping their community, be eager to learn more about government, and want to tackle issues facing our community. Student leaders are expected to meet online every other week from 4:00 \u2013 6:00 pm on Wednesdays starting in November 2023 and ending in April 2024. This year\u2019s Student Leadership Council will bring together students from the regions represented by Congressman Thompson and Speaker pro Tempore Aguiar-Curry which include Lake, Yolo, Colusa, and Napa counties as well as parts of Solano and Sonoma Counties.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Interested students can submit their application by filling out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/g\/g3ULwZMcPM\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">this form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. All application submissions must be made by 11:45 pm on Monday, September 18, 2023.\u00a0 If you have any questions, please contact me or our program coordinator, Brendan Sweeney, by calling (707) 542-7182 or emailing <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brendan.Sweeney@mail.house.gov<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>Senior Engagement and How Parents Can Get Involved<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is such an exciting and bittersweet year for our senior parents!\u00a0 We are here to help you keep pace and make sure you are supported in honoring and monitoring your senior as we approach graduation and your student\u2019s future plans.\u00a0 Note: Graduation Ceremony will be June 8, 9:00 AM in the Stadium<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many of our school sponsored senior activities don\u2019t get going until second semester &#8211; yard signs, scholarships, decision day, paint the town green, distinguished scholars, etc. &#8211; because your senior has a whole bunch of must do\u2019s this fall:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It is time to start on college applications. \u00a0 Many private colleges and CSU\u2019s start accepting applications this time of year.\u00a0 It is a good idea for your student to get some of these now.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We encourage parents to let students seek support for applications and complete them themselves.\u00a0 But, it is a great time for you, as parents, to help your child start thinking about what they want in a college or university.\u00a0 Do they want to study a particular subject?\u00a0 Do they want a large campus or small campus?\u00a0 Do they want to play a sport?\u00a0 Do they want to be in a city or smaller town?\u00a0 Do they want to be close to home or far away?\u00a0 Do they want to drive back and forth or fly?\u00a0 Do they want a competitive environment or a more supportive environment?\u00a0 Do they want to go somewhere where it snows, or is by the ocean, or is near extended family?\u00a0 These are the fun questions that are perfect for a carefully timed parent conversation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Senior Portrait Make-Up appointments will be on October 2-3.\u00a0 Prestige Portraits will send out communications as the date gets closer.<\/p>\n<p><b>Parent Engagement &#8211; Families Must Complete Parent Data Confirmation<\/b><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you haven\u2019t done this already, we have help available!\u00a0 Mrs. Gonzalez will be having office hours, Monday-Friday from 9:00-10:30am and 3:00-4:00 pm if you need support with completing the Parent Data Confirmation.
